Why Wandsworth?

Why Wandsworth?

Deciding where to live is a difficult decision, in London it is usually linked to two things…

1)    Where do you live if you are moving to London and are working there for the first time?

2)    Have you grown up in London?

Looking at number one, questions about where one might try and bed some roots include…

·      Distance to work?

·      North or South of the River?

·      Transport links?

·      Amenities?

·      Do they have friends in the area?

·      Affordability?

·      Future prospects and growth?

Wandsworth ticks all of these boxes, and some, and it has remained a very popular place for first time London residents, buoyed by Wandsworth’s famously low council tax rates.

When it comes to number two, it tends to lend itself to a fight or flight response. Fight to remain in the area in which you grew up or fly to pastures new.

Our Founder and Managing Director Carrie Scott was born on Jeypore Road in Wandsworth, her parents moved into the road in 1972 and have now lived in Wandsworth for 47 years. Carrie wanted to fight to remain…

“I grew up in Wandsworth in the 1980’s and 1990’s, but began to work in the borough in the 2000’s. The change seen in central Wandsworth during this time was dramatic. A one bedroom flat on Peartree Avenue SW18 at this time would have sold for around £57,500 in 1997, when I was 18. Fast forward 22 years and this property would be worth £350,000, meaning prices have risen by 508% during my adult life. Inflation during the same period was 80.4%, which means house prices have grown by 6.3x the rate of inflation in the last 22 years.

This makes it hard for long term Wandsworth residents to remain, but it is testament to the area that so many have tried. I love Wandsworth, I unequivocally do, and because of that I have worked very hard to make sure I can remain here and raise my family in the town that I adore.”

What this influx of money into the area has also meant has been a steady investment in Wandsworth over the last 20 years, with huge changes seen in and around the gyratory, Southside Shopping Centre (nee Arndale Centre), the Ram Brewery, King Georges Park and the renovation of thousands of Victorian homes.

Despite this change Wandsworth remains an area of character and of real depth. It is still proud of its roots and works hard to retain the history it worked hard to forge; which is one of the many reasons why it was, and still remains, a fantastic place to live.
